What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease where a person has blood sugar complications. Which is caused by a nonfunctional pancreas.Once you are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, it can never be cured. The pancreas is an organ inside the human body that carries out many functions. One of it's primary functions is to secrete insulin to stabilize a persons blood sugar (or also called blood glucose). Our bodies need the right amount of insulin for everything we consume. I'm sure you've heard of the two different types of diabetes. "Diabetes1 and Diabetes2" is not the correct way in stating the types of diabetes. The correct way in stating the two types is type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Type 1 and type 2 diabetes are probably a lot more related then many people think. Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes involve the pancreas and a persons insulin production. The difference is that with type 2 diabetics their pancreas produces insulin but not enough to balance out their blood sugar. Type 2 diabetes is mostly seen in older adults but recently kids have been diagnosed with this disease due to child obesity. A type 2 diabetic is treated with pills and can also be maintained by a good diet and regular exercise. A type 1 diabetic has no insulin production which unfortunately makes it harder to maintain. Type 1 diabetics are treated with insulin daily. Insulin injections, diet, exercising regularly, and avoiding sugar benefits a type 1 diabetic very much. Both type 1 and type 2 diabetics must check their blood sugar several times a day, observe what they eat, and make sure they stay healthy. What a lot of people unfortunately are unaware of is that if you are a type 2 diabetic and you do not take of yourself you can easily become a type 1 diabetic, in which it is much more difficult to maintain. Many people also do not recognize the symptoms of being a type 2 diabetic until it's to late and as a result they end up in a hospital in a coma. Usually by then, diabetes has done some of it's damage and a person who could have started on pills is now starting on insulin injections.

Who's affected by diabetes?

Diabetes does not discriminate it affects. There are 23.6 million people in the United States, or 8% of the population, who have diabetes. 24% of diabetes is undiagnosed. If you do not take care of your disease you are guaranteed to receive at least one of these illnesses in you life time; heart disease, kidney failure, loss of eye site and many more including death. Diabetes is only life threatening if you do not take care of yourself.

What is the lifestyle of a diabetic?

Every diabetic is different, and every diabetic has a different mentality toward this disease. Some bond with it, learn how to live with it, and love and respect their body. Others see it as a curse, and are ashamed. Many want to hide it from the world. All diabetics are waiting for the cure. Age really makes a difference in a diabetics life. From when they were diagnosed, to what age they are now, and how they view their disease.
